AHC 2010 SHOW INFO
by Cynthia Oliver

Hi, Remember this years‘ AHC show has been moved from mid summer to early fall. So, Save the Date! October 9th and 10th, 2010. This year‘s event will be hosted here at our farm in Hinckley, Ohio, 30 minutes south of Cleveland. We can‘t compete with either coast – east or west and despite recent media attention: Cleveland taking this year‘s top spot in Forbes annual ranking of America‘s Most Miserable cities, we are hoping you won‘t be scared away!

And, yes, Hinckley has its 15 minutes of fame every spring with the return of the buzzards to the Hinckley Reservation. And although buzzards aren‘t usually connected with anything appealing: after all, they eat dead stuff, they do return here every year in March. The park is a perfect habitat for the buzzards with its 90 acre lake accentuated with rocky bluffs rising hundreds of feet above the water. Buzzards (aka. Turkey vultures) don‘t nest; they roost – like chickens, or well, turkeys – so the rocky ledges are an ideal habitat. The park, only minutes from our house, also boosts some of the only rock climbing in NE Ohio, canoeing, kayaking, a 6.7 mile hiking/biking loop around the lake, bridle trails and fishing.

Despite, Cleveland‘s recent "award", it has a lot to offer. It is the lakefront home to great museums, botanical gardens, the zoo and tropical rainforest, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, Cleveland Indians, Cleveland Browns, LeBron James and the Cleveland Cavaliers, the theater district which is the largest performing arts complex outside of New York city and is known as a culinary destination boosting the home of Iron Chef, Michael Symon and his two restaurants.

We are within 10 minutes of the Cuyahoga Valley National Park, one of the top 10 most visited national parks. In addition to hiking, biking, canoeing, kayaking, you can take a ride on the scenic railroad, attend concerts at the summer home of the Cleveland orchestra, fish, golf, horseback ride and enjoy downhill and cross country skiing.

If you happen to be a horse enthusiast, you could visit (before you come here) the Kentucky Horse Park, Lexington, Ky. The 2010 World Equestrian Games will be held there 09/25 – 10/10. This is the largest equine sporting event ever held in the US and the first time ever to be held outside of Europe.

Once you arrive here, we have horses, ducks, chickens, cats and dogs. There is a pond for the dogs to swim and the anglers to fish. We have many acres of hiking trails or an ATV and golf cart if you‘d rather ride, a pumpkin patch, great fall foliage and lots of mid west hospitality!

We are so looking forward to the show in October ... visiting with old friends and meeting many new ones. Our house is 170 years old, and our style is definitely relaxed and comfortable, at times a little "shabby". Perfect for dogs!

My husband is a professional dog trainer and maintains an "in kennel" facility here for his clients' dogs. For the show weekend, we can make available crates where you can leave your dog for an hour or overnight. There also is a shower stall if your buddy needs a quick bath. Attached to the kennel area, we have 2 fenced outdoor runs: one gravel and one grass where the dogs are free to run off leash. The horse barn has hot and cold water and could have an empty stall or two if you wanted to bring your "pony" along!

For the actual event, we have a heated indoor 60x60 arena as well as a contiguous outdoor area. There is plenty of shade, if needed; a pond for fun or fishing, miles of trails for exercise or unwinding, the above mentioned fenced turn outs, crates on site, and just lots of places to hang out! If you want to take time and go rappelling or to the Rock Hall of Fame, we will be glad to take care of your dog here so you can go and relax.

On Friday evening, we will host a very casual dinner at the farm where you can all get acquainted and reacquainted. Dogs always welcome! Coffee, beverages and pastries will be available both Saturday and Sunday mornings. Box lunches will also be served on site both Saturday and Sunday. Dinner will follow the show Saturday here and we have surprise entertainment for you!

A list of "dog friendly" hotels follows, as well as a few links that you might want to check out.

In terms of economy and nearness, I suggest you look into the Days Inn/Richfield, Rodeway Inn/Medina and Red Roof Inn/Medina. I don‘t know anything about the campgrounds. You could park here, but we wouldn‘t have water or electrical connections. The Day‘s Inn in Richfield would give a group rate if we had a group, so that may be worth looking into, and it is the closest. See the link below for the Hill n‘Dale club as that is a possibility for lodging also as a group. If there is interest for that, let me know and we can arrange it for you through the owners.

Please feel free to call me for any help you need/want in making your reservations or with any questions. Remember, we can also keep your dog here in the kennel - whether a few hours or overnight. We have limited number of the largest (Great Dane) size crates but many of the next-size down.
